JOHN’S BLOG – DECEMBER 2020

We’ve had an extremely busy autumn season here at HEY Credit Union, so here’s an update for you on what we’ve been up to:

OUR THRIFTY CHRISTMAS SAVERS

This year’s Christmas will be very different for many of us, but one thing won’t have changed.  Ever since 2007, we’ve been helping our members to lock funds away safely for the festive season in our popular Christmas Saver account.  Despite temporarily unlocking the accounts this spring and summer to help those who were impacted by the pandemic, over 1,300 of our members managed to save up £869,644 this time round, and we started paying them out on 2 November.  If you haven’t had a Christmas Saver before, now is the ideal time to start one for 2021.  It’s worth noting that no major bank offers anything like it.

FIRST EVER VIRTUAL AGM A BIG SUCCESS

A lifetime in the Co-operative Movement has taught me the importance of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the members we serve can hold their directors and managers to account, ask challenging questions and cast their votes on various important topics.
Our traditional December AGM, held in the impressive setting of Hull’s historic Guildhall, is a highlight of my Credit Union year and I know many of our members feel the same.  We were therefore a little nervous about switching to an online alternative this year but, given the rules restricting large gatherings, there was little choice.   We needn’t have worried.   Although the directors and I missed seeing our members in person very much, we had some great feedback from those who logged on to our first ever virtual AGM on 8 December. I was especially pleased that we had members join in from every one of the seven towns where we have a branch, and even from Scotland!

A big thank you to Jackie from the ABCUL Virtual AGM Service, who hosted and administered the meeting superbly! We can thoroughly recommend the service to any credit union planning an AGM.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR

At an AGM, our directors report to our members on how the past year has gone and set out their plans for the future.   We’ve produced a quick-read summary here of our 2020 Annual Report.

COMMUNITY DONATIONS

On moving to a virtual AGM, we decided to donate the funds normally budgeted for the AGM room booking, members’ buffet tea, printed materials and so on, to a selection of organisations who support vulnerable people in the communities we serve.   We were pleased to donate £150 each to:

·        Kingfisher Café, Bridlington
·        Driffield & Wolds Food Bank
·        Goole Foodbank’s Christmas Toy Appeal
·        The Forge Project, Scunthorpe
·        Shores Community Pantry, Withernsea
·        Beverley Cherry Tree Community Pantry
·        Hull Trades Council Unity Shop Food Bank

MEGA LOTTERY DRAW

HEY Credit Union’s Friendly Folk have made their Grand Christmas Draw and given 48 members an early Christmas present, with prizes totalling £1,750.  The Members’ Lottery is drawn on the second Wednesday every month and you could be among the next batch of prize winners – but only if you’ve signed up to take part.  Tickets cost £1 (deducted from your CU Membership Account each month until you tell us to stop).   At least 60% of the ticket sales are returned to members as prizes over the year, the rest being donated to HEY Credit Union to help with advertising, training and admin.  We’re now taking applications to join our Members’ Lottery fun in 2021 – here is a joining form.

SHORES BECOMES OUR LATEST PAYROLL PARTNER

The Shores Centre in Withernsea has become the latest in a growing band of employers in our region to offer its workforce our unique Payroll Save & Borrow staff benefit.  Shores employees can now save as they earn, with deposits taken care of effortlessly straight from their pay packet.  It’s a safe and flexible way to put money aside knowing it’s there for sunny holidays or rainy days.  The Shores Centre Chief Executive Jayne Nendick, said: “It’s been a tough year with the pandemic and we’ve all had to be more mindful of our finances, so we are delighted to be working with the Credit Union to help support our teams in making their money go further”.   If you are an employer and would like to find out more about this simple, free wellbeing benefit, please click here or email info@hullandeycu.co.uk.

OUR FIRST SOCIAL IMPACT REPORT

We have recently launched our first ever Social Impact Report.  We’ve always been clear that credit unions have a different purpose from banks and other financial service companies, as they are not run simply to make monetary profits but to make a difference to the lives of their member-customers, and the communities they serve.  In short, they are about financial wellbeing, helping members to afford their lives and be better off as a result.  HEY Credit Union has been around for 21 years, but how much difference has it actually made?   That was what our member-elected directors wanted to find out, when they challenged me to produce this report.

I hope you will enjoy reading it and please give us some constructive feedback to help us improve future reports.    By reporting on their social impact, credit unions can help to advance the cause of fair, affordable and co-operatively-run financial services, which we are so passionate about.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR OPENING TIMES

Remember, we are here for you but our branch opening times will be a little different over the holiday period.  Here are the changes.

That’s all for now and for 2020, but I’ll be back with more news next year.   Before I close, though, I’d like to say a big personal “thank you” to our HEY Credit Union staff, volunteers and partners for all their hard work.  They have truly gone the extra mile to help and support our members this year in very difficult circumstances and I am so proud of them.  The kind messages we often receive from members shows that they share my view.

I hope all readers will have the best possible Christmas, some time for a well-earned rest and be able to look forward to better times to come.

HEY CU’s Christmas Blog

The most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching, and with it comes presents, clothes, holidays and shopping lists so long you’ll have to check them more than twice! The festive season is the most expensive time of year for most of us, so we at HEY Credit Union have put together a few handy tips to help cut the cost of Christmas this year.

1.    Stick to the budget!
It may seem obvious, but sticking to a set budget is one of the best ways to make sure you don’t overspend this Christmas. Sit down before you start shopping and draw up a list of everything you can think of – including presents, food & drink, clothing, transport, and so on – and the amount you estimate to spend on each. You can then keep track of how much you’re spending on each item, and tick them off the list once purchased. You’ll also be able to see where most of your budget is being spent, and will find it easier to reduce costs where possible.

2.    Beware of Christmas ‘deals’
Retailers know that almost everybody is in shopping mode the closer it gets to December 25th. Almost every advert and email you come across is trying to persuade you to part with your cash in exchange for Christmas gifts, with the promise of discounts and exclusive offers. In recent years, Black Friday and Cyber Monday promise slashed prices, and whilst you may be able to pick up the odd bargain – it’s essential to remember that retailers are trying to get you to spend as much as possible. Beware of overspending on items you don’t need, and be especially careful of Black Friday scams.

3.    Try ‘Secret Santa’
Gifting presents doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and the gifts we remember most are the ones that come from the heart. If you usually have a long list of people to buy for in your family or friendship group, why not try a Secret Santa? Each person gets given their own person to buy for – so you can really think about getting the perfect gift, whilst saving a pretty penny! It all adds to the excitement and thoughtfulness of the holidays.

4.    Take advantage of loyalty schemes
If you shop at a supermarket throughout the year, make sure to take advantage of any bonus or loyalty points you’ve accumulated. All of the major chains provide loyalty schemes to keep customers coming back, and Christmas could be a perfect time to cash in on the purchases you’ve made in the past 12 months.

5.    Proper preparation
Despite it only being just the one day, we all know preparation for Christmas starts well in advance of the 25thDecember. By making sure you get a head start on the festivities, you can save yourself quite a bit, especially if you’re booking travel over the Christmas period. Trains and flights tend to shoot up in price the nearer to Christmas you go, so try to plan ahead and book as early in advance as possible.
Whilst planning in advance is a great idea, it’s worth bearing in mind that many retailers drop their prices in the January sales. It could be worth keeping this in mind when shopping, and promising your loved ones their presents after the Christmas rush.

6.     Open one of our Christmas Saver Accounts for 2020!
This year, our members broke records, as they saved a huge £850,000 in this account over the course of 2019! We believe it’s the safest, and biggest, festive savings pot in the whole of the Humber region. By putting away as much or as little as you throughout the year, you can take the financial stress out of Christmas. Get a head start on 2020 and apply for an account today.

As November ends and December begins, here are a few fantastic events to get you in the mood for Christmas

With a magical Christmas tree, Kids Zone and festive food and drink stalls, you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere better to kick off the festive season. It’s also walking distance from our Head Office!

Come see us in Driffield Town Centre on Friday 29th November for the Christmas Lights Switch On, and say hello to Penny the Pennywise Penguin!

For one day only on Saturday 14th December, Scunthorpe town centre will be transformed into a winter wonderland with gifts, treats and snacks aplenty on offer.

Take the little ones to see Santa’s Sleigh in all its’ glory this December, as he makes his way around the streets of Bridlington from 1st December.

Wishing everybody a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year, from all of us here at HEY Credit Union.

Johns Blog - October 2019

It’s time to bring you up to date with all that’s been happening at HEY Credit Union during October, so here goes .…

OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT IN HULL
As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations we revisited our birthplace – Hull Guildhall – for a special Member Recruitment Day on 19 September.
As it was the monthly Council Meeting, we booked the Reception Room and invited our original members as well as Council Members and Officers to a sponsored afternoon tea.  A display of City of Hull Credit Union memorabilia, and a rolling presentation about the impact we’ve made over the past 20 years, created lots of interest.
We were thrilled that so many members who work at Hull City Council popped in to see us, including several who’ve been with us from the very beginning, and two of the founder directors!  It was obvious that they were still as enthusiastic as ever about the organisation that they helped to found.  Several Councillors also congratulated us on our achievements and more signed up to join.
If you work at Hull City Council, you can save and borrow with us using our popular payroll deduction scheme.

NEW BRANCH AT GOOLE OFFICIALLY OPEN
Thursday 17 October was International Credit Union Day, when events take place in over 100 countries to celebrate the work of credit unions.   It was also the day when the Mayor of Goole, Councillor Josie Head, came to officially open our smart new branch in the town, in the presence of HEY Credit Union directors, staff, Local Members’ Group members and guests.
The Mayor praised our “Team Goole” for providing such a professional service for local residents, especially at a time when the big banks are reducing their local branch networks.  Our new branch – in the splendid Old Station Hotelbuilding – is ideally placed in the town centre to attract more people to join.
Do pop in and see us if you live or work in the Goole area; from this week we’ll be open four days a week – Mon, Tue, Thu and Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm.

TEN YEARS OF FAIRBANKING
Recently I was honoured to represent HEY Credit Union at the Houses of Parliament to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Fairbanking Foundation, a charity dedicated to improving the financial well-being of consumers.
We are proud to be one of 26 credit unions recognised with its highest accolade, the 5 Star Fairbanking Mark, for the way we support our members to afford their lives with responsible Credit Union Loans.
Speakers from the Money and Pension Service, Ipsos Mori and the Association of British Credit Unions paid tribute to the Foundation for highlighting good practice in financial services and we received a cut glass trophy on behalf of the members of HEY Credit Union.

COULD YOU BE A CU DIRECTOR?
At this time of year, we invite our Members to consider standing for election as one of our 12 Directors.  Being a Credit Union Director is a volunteer role but a very satisfying one, as you are part of a team dedicated to the success of an organisation with fantastic values and ethics.  Because we’re a co-operative, owned by our members, our directors are voted into office by them at the AGM, with four being elected each year.
If this is something that may appeal to you, take a look at our Director role profile hereor pick up the phone to arrange an informal chat with John (CEO) to find out more (01482 778753).
One of our strengths is that our Credit Union Directors come from all walks of life, you don’t have to be working in the financial services industry to apply, and excellent training and support is provided.
Nominations for this year’s Board elections close at 6 pm on 25 November.

CHRISTMAS SAVINGS UNLOCKED!

We are into the busiest season of the Credit Union Year, as members can now withdraw the funds in their Christmas Saver accounts.
This year our amazing members have saved up a record £830,000 while bonuses totaling £3,025, funded by the Stop Loan Sharks Team, have been credited to those eligible.  For many of our members, being able to spread the cost across the year means “Christmas is sorted” and they have peace of mind that their funds are locked away in a completely safe account until the festive season.
Christmas Savers carry on from one year to the next, so there’s no need to set them up again.  This also means you get a full year to save up.

SUPPORTING OUR FOSTER CARERS
On Friday 1st November we were proud to support Hull City Council’s event at the KCOM Stadium to celebrate the contribution our City’s amazing Foster Carers make to our community. We ran an information stand, showing how families can benefit by joining the Credit Union and provided some goody bags and prizes for the free raffle.  The Foster Carers do some magnificent work helping to nurture the next generation of citizens and well deserved their “thank you” certificates presented by the Lord Mayor.
More Foster Carers are needed all the time and you can find out more about becoming one by clicking here.

RECOMMEND A FRIEND AND WIN £50

Our Members are very good at spreading the word and encouraging their friends to join the Credit Union Family, so we thought the opportunity to earn a reward would be welcome.
We are therefore inviting Members to Recommend a Friend to apply for a Credit Union Loan.  We’ll enter both the Member and their Friend in a Prize Draw to each win a £50 Shopping Voucher.  Refer a Friend slips are available here or in branch.
The draw will be made on 20 December.
With Christmas on the way, it’s an ideal time to encourage a friend, family member or workmate to sign up – so let’s get recruiting!

Members – pop this date in your Diary – your AGM will be held on Tuesday 10thDecember in Hull Guildhall at 5.45 pm.  More on this next time!

JOHN’S BLOG – FEBRUARY 2018

We are only into February but there’s lots going on at HEYCU to tell you about already:

RENEWABLE ENERGY POWERS NEW PARTNERSHIP

We are celebrating our new energy efficient status after installing solar panels, LED lighting and internal insulation as part of a new partnership with Co-op Energy.

Our Brook Street headquarters in Hull city centre now boasts 22 solar panels on the roof, along with new LED office lighting and internal insulation, provided by Co-operative Energy Saving.
Each solar twin peak panel has the capacity to produce up to 265w, meaning the new installation could create nearly 5,000kWh a year, saving up to £800 per annum.
Co-operative Energy Saving aims to help combat climate change by helping individuals, community groups and small businesses to reduce their energy consumption and bills.  This fantastic initiative has made us realise that, even as a relatively small organisation, we can play an important part in tackling climate change. It is an issue that we know our member-owners are very passionate about.
Martin Cook, Affiliates Manager at Co-op Energy, said: “One of our main goals as a co-operative is to help create a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable world, and working closely with like-minded individuals, communities and organisations is an essential part of this.
“Our project with Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union shows what can be achieved when we work collaboratively to help shape the future of energy generation.”

NOW OUR CHRISTMAS SAVER PRIZE DRAWS ARE MONTHLY!

We’re so thrilled with the big increase in Christmas Saver accounts this year that we’ve decided to have a special Prize Draw once a month to encourage members to keep on saving!
At each month end we’ll draw a winner at random from all who have paid into their Christmas Saver account during that month.  So, remember to make at least one deposit per month and then you’ll qualify to be entered in every draw.   You’ll also be very glad when Christmas comes along and you have lots of money to draw upon, for a stress-free festive season.
Our first prize winner – in January – was Gemma Smirk of Kingswood, who is the proud owner of a new food blender, to get her new year off to a healthy start.
February’s prize will have a Valentines’ theme –maybe the winner could be YOU?

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS AT LEBUS

We were delighted to welcome eight new members at Lebus Upholstery, the furniture makers in Scunthorpe where we have a payroll partnership. Lebus workers can save and borrow with us direct from their pay, thanks to their enlightened management who offer them this fantastic staff benefit.
Workers who use this service say they don’t miss the money, as it comes out before they get paid and goes into a savings account with us.   It’s a great way of “secret saving” for a special holiday or treat for a family member.   It’s also easy to change the amount – up or down – but many members just keep it the same year after year, building up a nice nest-egg for later in life.
Does your employer offer payroll deduction to our credit union?  If not, why not ask them to?   Employers simply contact us to find out how to operate it – and it’s really easy to administer.  If you can convince your employer to offer this benefit, we’ll reward you with £50.

CENTRE4 LAUNCH NEW SAVINGS CLUB TO HELP RESIDENTS PLAN AHEAD

Grimsby’s MP, Melanie Onn, helped us launch a new partnership for the people of North East Lincolnshire on Friday 23 February.  The Christmas Savings Club has now started at Centre4, the well-used community hub at Wootton Road, Grimsby.
Local residents will be able to pop into Centre4 to deposit small amounts of cash at a convenient time, giving them access to our credit union as a welcome alternative to payday loans, doorstep lenders and even illegal money lenders operating across North East Lincolnshire.
Linda Dellow, Chief Officer at Centre4 said, “We are delighted to offer a Christmas Savings Club from Centre4. We fully understand the financial pressures facing some people and how difficult it can be to budget from week to week, never mind keeping money back for Christmas. A Christmas Savings Club can help people put small amounts of money away on a regular basis and give them access to a savings fund at what is always an expensive time of year”.
For a limited time, a £10 bonus is available to anyone opening an account. The Christmas Savings bonus is provided by the Stop Loan Sharks project as a further incentive for people to develop a savings habit and keep away from high cost, high risk lending.  It is funded using proceeds of crime money; cash that has been seized from loan sharks under money laundering laws.
Tony Quigley, Head of the Illegal Money Lending Team, said:
“We’re pleased to be working with Centre4 and Northern Lincolnshire Credit Union to launch this new incentive, which will see loan sharks’ cash being put to good use, to sponsor new Christmas savings accounts.  Loan sharks prey on the most vulnerable members of our communities and extort them out of hard earned cash. If you have fallen victim to an illegal money lender, we urge you to contact us on 0300 555 2222 or www.stoploansharks.uk. We will take information anonymously and in confidence.”

HORNSEA WANTS A CREDIT UNION

I took a call from Councillor John Whittle of Hornsea in East Yorkshire the other day.  His enquiry was an all too familiar one these days, sadly.  The town of Hornsea (population 8.000+) is losing its last High Street bank in May.   After that, residents won’t have a local bank to pop into.   He asked whether the Credit Union could consider providing a service in the town.
Without funding, we would struggle to provide a high street banking presence in a town like Hornsea, but if we some enthusiastic volunteers came forward, maybe we could set up a weekly contact point, similar to those we operate in Driffield, Withernsea, Beverley, Howden and a few other places.   At least local residents would have somewhere to deposit savings and apply for affordable loans with a reputable organisation that cares for the local community – because we are owned by our members and exist solely to serve them, rather than make profits for City shareholders and bonuses for Fat Cat managers who I don’t suppose even know where Hornsea is.
Anyway, I’ve accepted an invitation to speak at Hornsea Town Council meeting on 5 March, so we’ll see what happens after that.  No promises, of course.

SCHOOL BANK NEWS

Recently my staff colleague Jamie-Leigh issued our Spring-term Pennies 2 Pounds Newsletter to the schools where we have a volunteer run school bank.   She reminded everyone that mums, dads, uncles, aunties, grandparents and younger or older siblings can all save at the school bank, not just pupils.  It’s a popular way to get the whole family into the habit of regular saving so that money is available for Christmas, holidays, school trips, kit and uniform, birthday treats and so on.   Staff at most of our schools can also pay into the Credit Union direct from their salary.
The newsletter offers volunteers some useful tips for spreading the word about a school bank:
·        Ask about mentioning your school bank on the school’s website.  Some do this already but others don’t, probably because no one has suggested it.  It’s a good way to let the parents and wider community know when the school bank runs.
·        Does the school produce a parents’ Newsletter? If so, perhaps they could include a short article about the school bank.
·        Hand out a flyer with an application form at the school gate (with head teacher’s permission).
·        Ask about sending flyers out with the children’s book bags.
·        Could someone offer to present an assembly in school, talking about the benefits of saving and looking after money, with some fun activities, music and rhymes?

We’re thrilled that Archie of Boothferry Primary School is our first P2P Saver to be awarded a Super Saver Certificate and P2P lunch bag.   He has saved with us regularly since the school bank opened in 2013 and reached an amazing personal savings target.

GOOLE & DISTRICT LOCAL MEMBERS’ GROUP

Our second meeting was held at The Courtyard, Goole on 31 January.  It was well-supported and we welcomed two new members.   The Know Your Credit Union Quiz was great fun and members were amazed to learn that since we were formed in 1999, our Credit Union reckons to have saved the people of Hull and East Yorkshire over £13 million by providing loans cheaper than doorstep lenders.   Jean Taylor and Janet Sowden won prizes for the most correct answers.
We discussed lots of ideas for improving the Pasture Road Credit Union branch, at modest cost.  We already have a play table to keep the little ones amused while parents make their transactions, and there are exciting plans to freshen up the décor, make better use of the back room and install a new sign.  We’re grateful to members of the Group for their suggestions and offers of help.
Since the meeting Councillor Pat O’Neil came to spend a day in branch with Jo and it was a great pleasure to have her company.  Pat was amazed at the variety of ways in which we try to help the people of Goole to make the best use of their money.   We have recently started to promote our partnership with Co-op Electrical, which lets members obtain domestic appliances much cheaper than certain weekly payment stores.  And they give a choice of delivery times!

VISITS TO DWP OFFICES

I’ve planned some visits to DWP sites over the next two months, to recruit more members, meet our Workplace Champions and say hello to existing members across the wide area we serve.  On 13-14 March I’ll be at Glasgow, Paisley and Motherwell.   April sees visits to Stockton-on-Tees, and possibly Seaham in the North-East, and also some offices in West Yorkshire.
It was fascinating to learn that we were featured in a question in Parliament, when it was revealed that the three credit unions serving DWP staff (CommSave, Voyager Alliance and HEYCU) had enrolled 3,800 DWP members and provided them with loans of £4 million since July 2016.
A busy few weeks lies ahead, as we will also be launching a new payroll partnership to provide our popular savings and loans service to the staff of North East Lincolnshire Council.

HULL’S HEADSCARF REVOLUTIONARIES

Did you see the BBC4 documentary about the group of Hull women who, 50 years ago, fought for decent health and safety at sea after 58 men lost their lives in the Triple Trawler Tragedy of 1968?
Deep sea fishing was the city’s most dangerous industry, with frequent loss of life, and many thought that nothing could be done about it.  Not so, “Big Lil” Bilocca and her friends, whose determined and ultimately successful campaign to stop unsafe trawlers from going to sea, in the face of stiff opposition from owners and sometimes the menfolk themselves, earned them the title “Headscarf Revolutionaries”.   It’s another example of the “power of the people” that makes us so proud of our home city.

CHILD BENEFIT LOAN & SAVINGS PLAN
This is rapidly becoming one of our most popular products, with several hundred families now regularly having their Child Benefit paid into the Credit Union.   It’s a really simple and sensible way of combining saving and borrowing to make the most of your money.   A loan of £500 over a year costs just £12 a week, which means that someone receiving Child Benefit of £21, could save up to £470 a year just by leaving it in to mount up, say for use at Christmas.  Find out more.
